Callaway Strata Review: The Best Deal For Beginner Golf Clubs

If you are a beginner golfer and looking for a great deal on a starter set of clubs, you should consider the Callaway Strata package. For under $200 you can get everything you need to start your golfing career (including a bag).

In this article, I’ll go over what’s included in the product, who these clubs are best suited for, and some other advice on buying golf clubs.

Everything To Get You Started

The Callaway Strata line is an entry-level golfers package. In my opinion, they are for golfers who are new to the game and don’t want to invest a ton of money on golf clubs.

As you are well aware, golf is expensive. It’s also not necessary to invest significant dollars in equipment when you are just starting.

There are several sets available from Callaway, ranging from 9 clubs all the way up to 12 clubs. If you are an absolute beginner and are on a budget, I think it makes sense to go with the 12-piece starter set.

Here’s what you’ll get:

  • Driver & fairway wood
  • Hybrid
  • 6-PW Irons
  • Putter
  • Stand Bag

For under $200 that’s an incredible deal. Most stand bags alone will set you back $100 or more themselves.

People Love Them

If you check out the reviews for the Callaway Strata set you’ll see that they are overwhelmingly positive. Here are some verified reviews from their Amazon listing:

Great price for a new set of golf clubs. These are a second set I keep down south so I don’t have to lug my clubs back and forth on the airlines. The set is complete with carry bag and all. My other set are Ping and I shoot the same no matter which set I use my handicap is not improved by more expensive clubs.

Great beginner set. I recently started playing golf and wanted to find a nice set of clubs that I could learn to play with. I have been using them for about 6 months and don’t have any complaints yet. They’re a great set for anyone just starting to learn how to golf.

Awesome golf set! I played at a course in Florida where they had $1,200 rental sets (they didn’t cost that much to rent…that’s how much they would have cost to buy as a set). These clubs outplayed those sets. I can hit these clubs well. Very nice! I am very impressed!

Why You Don’t Need Expensive Clubs

Since I started this website, I’ve learned a ton of about golf clubs and custom fitting. When you are first starting in golf, it doesn’t matter too much which clubs you play. Your primary goal is to start learning the game and establishing your technique.

I’ve spent a lot of time learning from one of the top club fitters in the game. They run an honest business, and one day I witnessed something unusual. A mother came in the shop looking to get her son custom-fit for golf clubs. They asked if he had ever played golf before. She replied no, and while most golf retailers would have jumped at the opportunity to sell her an expensive set, the owner of the shop turned her away.

His recommendation was for the son to get a starter set of clubs and take lessons. Once he established his technique, then he recommended getting custom-fit for a more permanent set.

I am a huge proponent of playing golf clubs that are suited for your game. However, it only makes sense to get it done once you have been playing golf for a while, and settle on a swing.

That’s why I believe it makes sense for beginners to save as much money as possible, and get a starter set like the Callaway Strata. If you spent $1500 on clubs in the beginning, they wouldn’t make you any better.

Wrapping It Up

If you are a golfing beginner or buying a gift for someone who is just starting in the game, I think the Callaway Strata set makes sense. They’re inexpensive, provide plenty of value, and manufactured by one of the most trusted names in golf.

Spending more money on golf clubs when you are a beginner will not necessarily make you a better player. I always recommend taking lessons, that is a far better investment. If you find out that you love the game, and want to continue playing more, then it might make sense to get custom-fit for clubs.

great review. I have a set of Strata clubs and I love them. I do have one question, as I consider swapping out clubs:

how does a 2018 Strata driver compare to, say a 2011 Callaway Diablo High Octane driver?

What I’m getting at here is wondering if due to technology, are this year’s starter sets as good as the really great sets from 8 years ago.

I am recently retired and wanted to take up golf again. I was looking at the Callaway Strata 16 piece ladies set. I am 5’11 and was wondering if I should purchase the men’s set. What is your opinion.
