Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa (Austin, Texas)

If you are visiting Austin, and want to play golf, the Omni resort features four courses that have been recognized as top in the state. Tom Fazio, who is known for preserving the natural beauty of his properties, designed two of the four championship courses. Fazio Foothills and Fazio Canyons have been ranked in the top 3 Texas golf courses and should be at the top of your list.

While all of these courses are challenging, they feature multiple tees for varying skill levels.

Pine Dunes Resort & Club (Frankston, Texas)

When you think of Texas golf courses, you probably don’t think about pine trees. However, the Pine Dunes resort has built a truly unique golfing experience in the middle of nature. David Frost famously remarked, “There is no need to go all the way to Augusta National or Pine Valley, we have our own right here in Texas.” Golfweek has awarded Pine Dunes best-in-state honors multiple times.

The Tribute at The Colony Golf Club (The Colony, Texas)

This is another golf course in Texas that might shatter your preconceived notions. Located on the eastern shores of Lake Lewisville, The Colony is a Scottish links-style course. You heard that correctly – links golf in Texas. The course architect sought out to pay tribute to some of the best holes from classic Scottish golf courses. You’ll see bits of St. Andrews, Royal Troon, Carnoustie, and some of the other classic courses that have hosted The Open.

The Max Municipal Course (Laredo, Texas)

Famed architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed one of the top municipal courses in the United States at The MAX. This course features stunning views of the Rio Grande, and won’t break the bank with their reasonable greens fees. LPGA legend Nancy Lopez opened up their new 9,000 square foot clubhouse several years ago where golfers can enjoy a meal and drinks before or after their rounds. This is a classic Texas golf course, which features a perfect blend of rugged terrain and golf.

Texas Star Golf Course (Euless, Texas)

Conveniently located just minuted from the Dallas/Forth Worth Airport, this is another great Texas golf course that is open to the public. Despite being located right next to a major city, you would never know it while walking their fairways. You’ll enjoy views of waterfalls and natural woodlands during your round, and be challenged by its championship layout. Be sure to stop by Raven’s Grille afterward for some fine dining!
