Welcome to Practical Golf, a site dedicated to helping everyday golfers improve and enjoy the game more.
What started as a small experiment with 5 articles has grown to over 150, and this blog has become one of the most popular game-improvement resources for golfers, with thousands of players from around the world reading articles daily.
Why Did I Start Practical Golf?
There are literally thousands of articles and videos available to golfers who are looking for advice online. Where do you start? Who do you believe?
I believe the problem in the game-improvement world is that there is too much instruction, and not enough coaching.
Instruction tells you where your hands should be during your swing, how you should be gripping the club, and deals with the technical elements of the golf swing.
There is so much more to golf than just the swing!
How do you practice effectively? How do you manage your emotions on the golf course? How do you choose the right strategy based on your scoring goals?
These are issues where coaching can help.
The role of a great coach is to educate and point people in the right direction. Think of this website as your personal golf coach. That is what Practical Golf is about.
I am going to guide you in the right direction on a number of issues in your game.
There are many low-hanging fruit for golfers that can lower our scores immediately, but we just need to change our perspective and alter our approach. As golfers we tend to get stuck in cycles, doing the same things over and over again. It’s not surprising that this does not result in any improved performance.
This site will help break that cycle and get you moving in the right direction.
Who Am I?
You’re probably asking yourself at this point why you should listen to me.
I am a golfer just like you. I love this game, and its been one of the central passions of my life since I was a little boy. Over the last 20+ years I have dedicated myself to learning, and finding ways to improve. Through a lot of failure, observing other golfers, and hard work, I have reached many of my goals as a player.
I want to help you do the same!
I have conquered every single major scoring milestone at various stages of my life. I have broken 100, 90, 80, and even 70. I have competed in U.S. Open Qualifiers, college tournaments, and various other amateur events. Currently, I play between a 0-2 handicap, so I know what it takes to get to the highest level of golf.
More importantly, I have been out on the course thousands of times with players like you. I understand the issues that plague golfers, and I am passionate about coming up with new ways to help them.
Where Do You Start?
There is a ton of information on this site. I’ve written extensively, and gotten some great contributions from other coaches on the following topics:
- Course strategy
- How to practice effectively
- The mental side of the game
- Understanding golf equipment
- Important swing concepts
- What products are worth your money
You can access more than 150 free articles in our archives here. The point of all of my articles is to give you a new perspective, and each of them will resonate with certain golfers differently.
My suggestion is to earmark a few key issues that pertain to your game and work on them exclusively. It’s very difficult to progress as a golfer working on 10 different things at the same time.
I’ve also written a best-selling book entitled “101 Mistakes All Golfers Make (and how to fix them).” It has been one of the most popular books on Amazon, and Martin Hall from the golf channel called it a “simple, complete guide to golf.” You can find more about it here.
If you want to stay updated on when new articles post you can subscribe to my newsletter. I will also send you a free copy of my 30 page eBook on course strategy (which also has been a bestseller on Amazon).
Thanks for stopping by, and don’t hesitate to get in contact with any questions, feedback, or ideas.
Regards,
Jon Sherman
